Spirit of Show is a documentary following the making of the 2026 Aberdeen Student Show, Cove Actually.

For over 100 years students in Aberdeen have staged an original musical comedy at His Majesty’s Theatre.  The show parodies well-known titles from the world of film, theatre and literature and is written mostly in Doric.

Delving into the history and traditions of the show, the film will feature show alumni looking at its impact over the years, its use and celebration of Doric and the comedic and cultural differences between the north east and the rest of Scotland.

The film is being directed and produced by Aberdeen filmmaker Lynne Cowie, who herself participated in the show throughout her university years and went on to direct the show in 2008.

The film has received the backing of Creative Scotland Crowdmatch funding – meaning that Creative Scotland will match crowdfund donations pound for pound (up to £250 per individual donation). The film’s £10,000 target includes a budget to employ local crew to work on the production in Easter 2026.

Any donations are much appreciated to help bring this film about a unique and special Aberdeen institution to life!
