Sunday 29 March 2026 at Delgatie Castle was a proud and memorable day for Doric culture and those who champion it.
At the prestigious Scottish Samurai Awards, organised by the Order of the Scottish Samurai (OSS), Frieda Morrison, Chair of the Doric Board, received an OSS Taisho Award in recognition of her outstanding services to Doric and music. It is a well-deserved honour for someone who has dedicated so much of her life to preserving and promoting the language, traditions and voice of the North-East.

Frieda’s work has ensured that Doric remains vibrant and relevant today, reaching new audiences while staying true to its roots. Her passion, warmth and commitment have made her one of the most important ambassadors for the culture.
Also recognised were Norman Fiddes and Robina Fiddes, who both received OSS Taisho honours for their contributions to music, young people, charity and local culture. Their longstanding dedication has had a lasting impact on communities across the North-East.

Many will also have enjoyed hearing Norman and Robina recently featured on Scots Radio, where they shared their love of traditional music, community life, and help with young people, making this recognition especially timely.
A highlight of the day was a wonderful musical performance from Frieda Morrison and Charlie Abel, who brought the hall to life with traditional bothy ballads. Their performance was warmly received and added a special cultural richness to the occasion.
The Scottish Samurai Awards celebrate values of respect, service and community, values that strongly reflect the spirit of Doric culture. Seeing Frieda, Norman and Robina recognised in this way is a moment of real pride for the Doric Board.
Congratulations to them all on this well-earned recognition.
